The internet often seems to work on its own: we search on Google, open social media, or browse websites without thinking about what happens behind the scenes. But in reality, there is a whole structure in place to ensure that everything functions securely, stably, and in an organized way. A key part of that structure is internet governance, and within it, the public meetings held by ICANN.
In this blog, we explain what ICANN is, how its public meetings work, and why you—as an internet user—can also take part in shaping the future of the internet.
What Is ICANN?
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-profit organization responsible for coordinating key elements that allow the internet to function: domain names, IP addresses, and the root server system.
In simple terms, ICANN helps ensure that when you type a web address like www.google.com or www.gt, you reach the correct destination, without confusion or error.
What Are ICANN Public Meetings?
ICANN holds three public meetings per year, open to anyone interested. These meetings bring together participants from all over the world: government representatives, businesses, civil society, technical communities, and individual users. The goal is to discuss key topics related to the technical operation of the internet, domain name policies, and broader governance issues.
The best part? They are free and open to the public, both in-person and online. This means anyone with an interest can join, learn, and even get actively involved.
What Topics Are Discussed?
Some of the topics covered in ICANN public meetings include:
-
New domain name extensions (like .app, .tech, or .eco).
-
Security and stability of the Domain Name System (DNS).
-
Data protection and privacy policies.
-
Access and participation for underrepresented regions.
-
Emerging issues like digital identity and artificial intelligence.
Each meeting offers dozens of sessions, workshops, and open forums where participants can ask questions, hear proposals, and share ideas.
Why Should You Care?
Even if it seems technical or distant, internet governance affects us all. From how your personal data is protected to how you access a website or register a domain name.
Being informed or involved allows you to:
-
Better understand how the internet works.
-
Contribute to global decisions that impact your digital community.
-
Defend your rights as a user, especially around access, privacy, and online safety.
-
Represent your country and region in global spaces where Latin America is still underrepresented.
How Can You Participate?
You can join ICANN’s public meetings by registering for free on their official website. Once registered, you’ll receive the full meeting agenda and can choose the sessions that interest you most. Many sessions are beginner-friendly and include live translation in multiple languages, including Spanish.
You can also join ICANN’s working groups to contribute to more technical or policy-oriented discussions. You don’t need to be an expert—just have interest and commitment.
Guatemala Has a Voice Too
At the .gt domain registry, we actively participate in these meetings as part of the global technical internet community. We are proud to represent Guatemala in these spaces, contributing our experience and perspectives as the entity responsible for managing the .gt country-code top-level domain.
We believe that regional inclusion and multilateral dialogue are essential to building a fairer, safer, and more accessible internet for all. And we invite you to be part of this collective effort.
