On June 18, 2026, Universidad del Valle de Guatemala paid a well-deserved tribute to Ing. Luis R. Furlán, an Internet pioneer in Guatemala. In 1991, he established the country’s first Internet connection, and a year later, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) entrusted him with managing the .gt domain, laying the foundation for Guatemala’s digital identity.

The .gt Domain Name Registry joins this tribute with deep gratitude. The more than 27,080 active domains under the .gt extension reflect the impact of his vision and hard work, which contributed to developing the digital infrastructure that now connects businesses, institutions, and citizens both inside and outside the country.
