2020 was a year of many changes and unforeseen events. Due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, we modified our procedures and we only attended you through email and/or telephone.
In January of this year, our offices returned to the main campus of Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, of which we are part. This will allow serving you more efficiently.
Guatemala was selected at the end of 2020 by + RAÍCES Program, of LACNIC (Latin America and the Caribbean Internet Address Registry), to install a copy of one of the thirteen Internet Domain name root servers. A root server is a fundamental part of the Internet infrastructure that makes it easy to use, acting as the backbone of online access. One of the main challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to Latin America and the Caribbean is the digitization of the region since many institutions did not have an Internet presence. This corresponds to the low penetration of the Internet in the region which in the case of Guatemala was 30% in 2019.
Many companies and governments have a large amount of valuable information in computer systems or the cloud. That’s why cybersecurity is increasingly important, as it helps protect companies from attacks by malicious hackers. A relatively new strategy to prevent information from being stolen or erased is Ethical Hacking.
The Internet goes through a lot of transformations that we rarely notice. One of these changes that went unnoticed was DNS Flag Day. This event was held for the first time in 2019 and its second edition was on October 1 of this year.
Every day more devices are connected to the Internet. Each of these devices, ranging from computers to home appliances, need an IP (initials for Internet Protocol) address to connect and function. When you connect to the Internet, your device is assigned a unique number, world wide, to identify it. All websites have an IP address too.
Since the 1980s, different organizations have worked in telemedicine with limited development due to the lack of knowledge of the population and the low connectivity in the region. While COVID-19 cases are increasing in Latin America, this tool helps protect the most vulnerable and reduce the load of hospitals.
